I love em. A neighbor of mine has one, in black, and I love it. I think I'll end up buying one at some point, they are cheap. I mean it's a lightweight, RWD, 5 speed truck. I think it would be both fun and useful.
Talk me down, or help me find one. I probably will wait until I buy a house, but with tax refund money coming the temptation might be too great...

Also very easy to swap a V8 into.

My very first car before a got my Saab was a lifted 93 with a 4.3 in it. Five speed short bed short cab. It was a ton of fun in the mud but I kept breaking it and would have to ride the bus to school which was completely unacceptable. I sold it to my dad and bought a Saab.
That little truck with that 4.3 liter motor and a manual trans was some of the most fun I have ever had in a car.

You are not weird, they are cheap, fun, and moddable!

Probably not for me. I've never owned a car more than 5 years old and the most mechanical work I've ever done is installing my intake, which involved loosening and then tightening some screws.

I might get one instead of a Miata next year...
Miata will come later though

No it's not weird I want one too, mainly to lower and stick a big block Chevy into. The engine bay is just big enough. Have to do a little shuffling of stuff but it will fit. That or a Ls swap

Seems like the perfect truck to build up your wrenching skills.

Not weird. There was one down the street from me with CA plates on it (I'm in Chicago). Seller was asking only $800 for a very solid truck that really didn't need anything other than a good buffing.

I miss mine desperately....except for the electrical problem.
'92 S10 regular cab 4.3L and 5-spd. Was a great truck for years, until the shitty welds on the exhaust let go and the exhaust pipe melted the right rear taillight which ended up causing other electrical gremlins.

There are a couple in my area with small-block conversions. As you-outs: small, light and plentiful. Stick any decent running V8 in there (there are multiple conversion kits available), back it with a manual trans, and (if the truck you buy doesn't already have one) slap in an 8.5" rear-end from a donor. Instant hot-rod perfect for big, stupid burn-outs.

BAD IDEA JEANS.
Those are execrable. Look, I'm no GM hater; I've owned 7 GM cars over the years. But the S10 from the 80's suuuuuuucked. My step brother owned one, and he had to replace a part in the clutch assembly 14 times. 14! And that's just one part; the thing was broken more than a British Leyland car.

I can't talk you down from this one. In high school one of my classmates had one that was slammed and had straight pipes running from the 4.3L V6. He cut out the area behind the seats and built a box from sheet metal, that was sprayed to match the body, to hold two 12" subs and whatever type of amp he had. It was loud, uncomfortable and driven fast.

I'd probably leave it stock.
Ideally I'll find one that's mechanically sound (as sound as a 20 year old car can be), but a little worn. Then I can work on restoring the body as best as possible, fix up the paint, fix up the interior, etc.
It would just be a fun diversion from my Sonic, a wintertime plaything, and a hauler for my planes.

That's exactly the kind of truck I hope to find. Even if it needs more than a buffing, if it's mechanically sound I wouldn't mind using it as a testbed for repainting and refinishing

It is weird. You're looking for a small lightweight truck of that era wtih a blue oval on the front. Actually just kidding, do what you please.

I'm guessing you mean "without" a blue oval.
I can't have a divided house, it's gotta have the bowtie

I bought a 2nd gen and I've converting into a race truck. 4.3L 2wd 5spd stripped to just over 2000 lb. Its like a lotus ute. Do it before the hipsters catch wind and drive the prices up.

You raise a valid point. Now someone tell that to my dad, who has the only Chevy in the house.
